How the Survey is Conducted

Register of R&D performing organisations
A*STAR’s Research and Statistics Unit maintains a current register of organisations that are known to us to be R&D performers.

Preliminary survey
Every year, a preliminary survey is conducted to identify R&D performing organisations which have not been captured in the register.

The preliminary survey comprises yes/no questions on whether the surveyed organisation performed R&D in the reporting year and the preceding year.

The list of organisations surveyed in the preliminary survey is compiled from various sources, including R&D grant recipients, tenants of science parks and press reports.

The register is also updated to remove organisations that have ceased operations or reported that they have ceased to perform R&D.

The preliminary survey is usually conducted from December to March.

Main survey
The main survey collects comprehensive data on R&D activities from R&D performing organisations in the private sector, higher education sector, public research institute sector and government sector.

All organisations in the register of R&D performers are surveyed.

The main survey is usually conducted from April to July.
