The Biopolis Shared Facilities (BSF) forms the heart of Biopolis and aims to provide a wide range of scientific and support services to its tenants in the most cost effective manner.
A Biopolis Shared Facilities Executive Committee (BSF Exco) was set up to oversee the implementation and set up of the various units under BSF. This BSF Exco comprises A/Prof Ren Ee Chee (Chairman), A/Prof Lam Kong Peng and Mrs Tay-Png Hong Lan. This committee has a team of dedicated staff, supporting BSF daily operations.

This facility provides Biopolis researchers with timely access to the most current supplies at bulk discounted prices. Cold rooms and ultra low temperature freezers allow for storage of perishable enzymes and reagents. In addition, a Freezer programme has already been launched, housing a full range of enzymes and freezer items. An e-procurement portal will be in place in mid 2006. This system will include e-business functions like online product catalogues, intuitive search engines and order tracking. It will also feature a web based, easy-to-use interface to enhance the user’s entire buying experience. For enquires, please contact Joe Sim at joe_sim@bsf.a-star.edu.sg. |
Glassware Washing
This facility is equipped with state-of-the-art washing equipment that provides for both standard and specialized washing programs. Autoclaving and drying capabilities are also available. This facility also houses two custom designed machines that automates loading of pipette tips into boxes before autoclaving. For enquires, please contact Toh Bee Keow at toh_bee_keow@bsf.a-star.edu.sg. |
Media Preparation
Our in-house media preparation facility produces a variety of standard media for both tissue and bacterial culture use. In addition, special formulations and custom media are available upon request. The facility produces more than 7000 litres of media per month under stringent quality control protocols. For enquires, please contact Toh Bee Keow at toh_bee_keow@bsf.a-star.edu.sg. |
Scientific Services
Confocal
The facility will provide both routine and ultra high speed confocal image capturing solutions on the fixed, live and animal samples. This unit has one Zeiss Meta upright and one Zeiss DUO inverted confocal microscopes. It also provides image analysis, management and sample preparation/processing support, as well as advising on proper experimental designs. This facility is overseen by Dr. Hanry YU of IBN. (email:hyu@ibn.a-star.edu.sg). |
DNA Sequencing
This facility is equipped with an ABI 3730xl and two ABI 3700 DNA sequencers, which provide a throughput of 7000 reads per week. Users can submit both labeled and unlabelled DNA for sequencing. The facility is overseen by Dr. Alice TAY of IMCB. (email: mcbalice@imcb.a-star.edu.sg). For any enquires, please email cptan@imcb.a-star.edu.sg |
Flow Cytometry
This facility operates a Becton-Dickinson FACSAria Cell Sorter for cell sorting and analysis. The machine has up to 3 air-cooled lasers: 488-nm Blue, 633-nm Red and 407-nm Violet. It is capable of performing 11 colour analysis, 2- and 4-way bulk sorting to tubes, and single-cell sorting to well plates (ranging from 6 to 384-wells) or microscope slides. Sorting and analysis are performed in a temperature and aerosol controlled environment. Digital acquisition rates of up to 70,000 vents/second, fixed-alignment cuvette flow and digital sweet-spot monitoring are what make FACSAria a high speed and yet very accurate benchtop cell sorter. Soon, a FACS analyzer will be added to the facility to meet the increasing demand of FACS analysis. This facility is overseen by Dr. Bing LIM of GIS. (email: limb1@gis.a-star.edu.sg). For enquires, please email loh_siew_chin@bsf.a-star.edu.sg. |
| High Content Screen
The High Content Screen (HCS) facility provides researchers with the capacity for large-scale, quantitative cell based experiments. It is equipped with a Cellomics Arrayscan VTI, allowing automated imaging of cells plated in any SBS-standard plate, up to 384-wells. It permits analysis of individual cells, subpopulations, and multiple data points per cell and well. Any phenotype which can be visualized on a fluorescent microscope can be measured, including cell morphology changes, apoptosis, cell cycle, proliferation, invasion and protein translocation. This facility is overseen by Dr. Christopher WONG of GIS (email: wongc@gis.a-star.edu.sg). For enquires, please email wongc@gis.a-star.edu.sg. |
Histology
The BSF Histology team will process, section, stain and photograph both fixed and frozen tissue. Using histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, customised tissue arrays and brightfield microscopy we will seek to turn your tissue biopsy and antibody into an informative slide and a publishable photograph. The facility is overseen by Mr. Declan LUNNY of CMM (email declan@cmm.a-star.edu.sg). For enquires, please email huiling@bsf.a-star.edu.sg. |
| Microarray
The Microarray Centre is equipped to support the Affymetrix GeneChip and Illumina BeadChip platforms as well as a variety of spotted arrays and array-related applications. Resources are available for RNA validation, target cRNA labeling/preparation, chip-hybridisation/post-processing, array scanning and the manufacture of customised microarrays. Training courses and equipment tutorials will be offered. This facility is overseen by Dr. Lance MILLER of GIS (email: millerl@gis.a-star.edu.sg). For enquires, please email raymund_chan@bsf.a-star.edu.sg. |
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)
Equipped with Bruker Avance DMX 400MHZ. Services available are 2D experiments, Carbon 13 and Proton detection. Experiments in the solid state and at variable temperatures can be carried out. The facility is overseen by Dr. WANG Yue of IMCB. (email: mcbwangy@imcb.a-star.edu.sg). For enquires, please email nmr@imcb.a-star.edu.sg |
Proteomics
The Proteomics Laboratory provides services for the analysis of proteins and peptides using state-of-the-art technology. Samples can be handled from a variety of sources such as gels, LC fractions or immunoprecipitations. Equipped with MALDI-TOF MS, nanoLC-MS/MS and a high throughput ABI4800 TOF-TOF it is possible to rapidly identify proteins as well as a number of posttranslational modifications. Spectra are searched against current protein databases to provide completed reports. Charging will be done according to the service rendered.
