National Science Scholarship (MD - PhD)

Introduction

The NSS(MD-PhD) scholarship is tenable for PhD training under the MD-PhD programme at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School (GMS). It complements the NSS(MBBS-PhD) scholarship in the training of clinician-scientists to undertake world-class translational research in Singapore.

Scholars will be allowed to proceed to clinical specialist training in Singapore, subject to their academic performance, aptitude and the research needs of A*STAR.

Eligibility

  • Singaporeans, Singapore Permanent Residents and ASEAN Nationals. Successful candidates who are not Singapore Citizens are expected to take up Singapore Citizenship.              
  • Candidates must have a first degree in relevant disciplines, and have obtained First Class Honours, GPA of 3.8 and above from US universities or a CAP of 4.5 and above from local universities.
  • Candidates are expected to attain good GRE scores. The average scores of successful awardees for the NSS(PhD) scholarship for the combined Verbal and Quantitative components for the last 2 batches (2005 and 2006) were 1440 with a standard deviation of 70. All successful awardees would also have to obtain a score of at least 4.5 for the Analytical Writing components. Applications without GRE test scores will still be considered but successful candidates will have to satisfy the GRE requirement prior to them embarking on their PhD studies.
  • Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in both research and clinical studies 
  • Candidates should have completed the first year of the MD programme at Duke-NUS GMS.
  • Candidates should have satisfied the criteria for admission into the Duke-NUS GMS PhD programme.

Coverage*

Successful candidates will be given support for up to 4 years of academic pursuit at Duke-NUS GMS.

Successful candidates will receive:

  • Monthly sustenance allowance
  • Annual book allowance
  • Annual conference allowance
  • One-time computer allowance
  • One-time miscellaneous allowance
  • One-time thesis allowance

*All rates/allowances are subject to adjustments by A*STAR from time to time.

Service Commitment

The NSS(MD-PhD) scholarship comes with a 4-year service commitment, which will be served at A*STAR research institutes after the completion of housemanship, or subsequent specialist training.
