The BII’s science outreach activities which target secondary school and junior college students aim to inspire youths to embark on a research career in Singapore. Among the many activities organized by BII are school visits and student attachment opportunities. BII also participates actively during science.0x (the national Science Month) and offers valuable workshops for the teachers. In 2004, BII collaborated with Temasek Junior College to launch the BioIT portal (PRIMER) which enables students, teachers and scientists to learn more about bioinformatics and molecular biology online. For more details on BII’s science outreach activities, please click here.
Bioprocessing Technology Institute (BTI)
Outreach activities by BTI to the students and teachers have been extensively established over three years. Students, teachers and parents have the opportunity to visit the laboratories in BTI during science.0x, the national Science Month in September every year. In addition, JC students can participate in the A*STAR-MOE Student Attachment Programme where they can gain valuable research experience in bioprocess technology. BTI is also one the supporting institutes for A*STAR’s Teacher Local Attachment program. For highlights of these outreach events offered by BTI, please click here.
Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS)
The Genome Institute of Singapore engages in research that builds on knowledge regarding the genome sequence of humans and other species. GIS researchers have expertise in cancer, infectious diseases, human genetics, bioinformatics, and many other disciplines. GIS welcomes tours by school groups, and have been actively participates in numerous attachment programmes supported by A*STAR, MOE and others agencies.
Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN)
The IBN Youth Research Program aims to promote an active research culture among students, particularly those from the secondary and tertiary levels. Students can take part in talks, workshops and research attachments which are carefully planned by IBN to expose them to research in bioengineering and nanotechnology. In addition, the IBN Youth Research Program provides workshop or attachment training to teachers who have a strong interest in research. Teachers will be introduced to many recent research topics which are currently investigated by IBN scientists. For more information on the IBN Youth Research Program, please click here
Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB)
The IMCB Research Outreach Program (ROP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, organizes hands-on workshops for students to know more about current laboratory techniques. Students are also given the opportunity to interact with IMCB scientists during these workshops. In addition, IMCB also provides lab attachment training for teachers through Teacher Work Attachment program and A*STAR’s Teacher Local Attachment program. For information on IMCB ROP, please click here.
BMRC Distinguished Visitor Programme
A*STAR Biomedical Research Council (BMRC) hosts a BMRC Distinguished Visitor Programme (DVP) which aims to foster stronger ties between the local scientific community and internationally renowned scientists. Distinguished Scientists are invited to Singapore to participate in a one-week visit programme, where they will visit various research institutes and centres, as well as to give public lectures on the latest research development to the students and public. For the upcoming DVP lectures, please click here

Data Storage Institute (DSI)
DSI has been actively involved in coming up with initiatives to reach out to students, especially to the junior college and secondary school students. DSI conducts workshops (for example, the Nanoscience workshops at VJC in 2006), talks as well as laboratory tours in schools. DSI also collaborates with the Singapore Science Centre on events such as X'periment and “Meet the Scientist” Talks, where DSI researchers bring across data storage technology to students as well as members of the public. Through these outreach activities, DSI hopes to interest students about data storage and in future, to take up scholarships or further their studies in the area of science and engineering.
Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES)
ICES provides JC students with research attachment opportunities under the A*STAR-MOE student attachment programme. Here, students can undertake a one-month research attachment during the school vacation. For more information on ICES’ student attachment program, please click here.
In addition, ICES hosts three-day workshops for secondary students to learn about polymers and bioplastics. During the workshop, students participated in inquiry-based lab activity and lab procedures where they are encouraged to apply textbook-based theories on real experimental projects. Click here to find out more about the recently completed event.
Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC)
The IHPC Science Outreach Programme aims to inspire passion among secondary school and tertiary students in the fields of science and engineering. In addition to student attachment programmes and seminar talks, IHPC hosts the Visualization Camp which exposes students and teachers to the latest visualization technology. IHPC also organizes the HPC Quest, a competition that challenges students to solve engineering problems. For more information on the various outreach events organized by IHPC, please click here.
Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R)
With the objective to provide research and development training for students and teachers, the I2R Science Outreach programme has a range of exciting activities such as talks on recent research topics and career development as a scientist. On top of that, I2R also provides research attachments for teachers and students who will work together with I2R scientists on some of their current research projects. For more details on the different activities offered by I2R Science Outreach, please click here.
Institute of Materials Research & Engineering (IMRE)
IMRE’s Youth Outreach group works closely with the A*STAR Graduate Academy and Singapore Science Centre to support many interesting science activities such as X-experiment Exhibition, Meet-the-Scientist Talks, as well as the National Science Challenge. In addition, IMRE scientists participate in various school events and community workshops, which include Jurongville Science Camp, Bukit Timah Primary School science fair and Marine Parade Community library science workshop, to motivate students’ interest in science and engineering, and IMRE also hosts research attachment training for students, allowing students to gain first-hand research experience. For more information on the various Youth Outreach activities by IMRE, please click here.
