National Science Scholarships (BS)

Purpose

This scholarship supports undergraduate studies. Candidates with outstanding performance for undergraduate studies will proceed to PhD upon satisfactory completion of a minimum 1-year research attachment at one of A*STAR's Research Institutes.

Eligibility
  • Singaporeans, Singapore Permanent Residents and ASEAN Nationals. Successful candidates who are not Singaporeans are required to take up Singapore Citizenship. 
  • For Outgoing 'A' Level Curriculum: Candidates should have at least 4 distinctions in relevant 'A' level subjects and at least 1 'S' paper merit
  • For New 'A' Level Curriculum 2006: Candidates must offer 11 units or more at A levels.  They must offer, and have obtained As in 3 H2 content-based subjects out of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Candidates must also have obtained *at least 1 H3 merit in the sciences or mathematics.
  • Candidates with other qualification equivalent to 'A' level, such as IB, are also invited to apply.
  • Candidates must obtain a minimum score of 2100 for SAT I and 1400 for SAT II (minimum score of 1400). Those who have not taken SAT may also apply but successful candidates will have to satisfy these requirements prior to embarking on the scholarship.
  • Candidates who show passion for science and research are preferred.

* Candidates without the relevant H3 subject, but have 4 H2 content-based subjects in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, are also welcome to apply.

Coverage

Successful candidates will be given support for up to 8 years of academic pursuit, leading to a PhD degree.

Successful candidates will receive:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Monthly sustenance allowance
  • Annual book allowance
  • Annual return airfare
  • Computer allowance
  • Warm clothing
  • Settling-in allowance

*All rates/allowances vary according to country and university, and are subject to adjustments by A*STAR from time to time

Service Commitment

The NSS (BS) scholarship comes with a 6-year service commitment comprising of

  • A compulsory 1-year research attachment* at an A*STAR Research Institute between the BS and PhD studies.
  • 5 years at A*STAR's Research Institutes upon completion of PhD studies.

*NSS(BS) scholars who have completed their undergraduate studies may be considered for the Duke-NUS GMS MD PhD programme on a highly competitive basis. A*STAR will fund only the PhD phase of the MD-PhD programme, subject to scholars meeting the yearly academic requirements during the MD phase. Interested scholars must notify A*STAR and submit their application to A*GA before 30 September 2008, for the August 2009 intake. Scholars shorlisted and approved by the A*STAR interview panel will then apply to GMS for admission. Upon successful completion of the MD/PhD programme and housemanship, scholars may be considered for clinical specialist training in Singapore, subject to their academic performance, aptitude and research needs of A*STAR.

NSS(BS) scholars who wish to pursue other MD-PhD programmes must notify and obtain approval from A*STAR before applying for admission into the programme.
