Introduction

The next phase of Singapore's development as a biomedical sciences research hub will focus on translational research, in which the discoveries made by basic scientists are used to develop new ways of detecting, treating or preventing disease. In this way, new scientific knowledge is translated from the bench to the bedside in the hope of improving human health.

The MBBS-PhD scholarship has thus been established to train clinician scientists who will be able to apply their clinical knowledge and skills in carrying out world-class translational research.

The scholarship will support 3 years of undergraduate studies, followed by 5 to 6 years of MBBS and PhD or intercalated MBBS-PhD in the UK (A*STAR's continual support is subject to scholars meeting yearly academic requirements).

Outstanding MBBS graduates from NUS will also be given support for their PhD studies in the UK or US under this scholarship.

Scholars will be allowed to proceed to clinical specialist training in Singapore, subject to their academic performance, aptitude and the research needs of A*STAR.
