Biomedical Sciences Support

A*STAR's Biomedical Research Council supports Singapore's nascent biomedical sciences industry through developing skilled manpower, building core intellectual properties for licensing and investing in key infrastructure & facilities. The links below gives an overview of our R&D capabilities & resources that is relevant to industry.

RI Capabilities & Resources

A*STAR's RIs are mapped to Singapore's main science-driven industry cluster to ensure that the technology, expertise and infrastructure developed are relevant to the industry.

The following gives a brief idea of the research carried out at the various RIs in the Biomedical Field & the facilities available at Biopolis, Singapore's biomedical hub.

R&D Support for Industry

The Singapore Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Initiative was launched in June 2000 to develop the Biomedical Sciences cluster as one of the key pillars of Singapore's economy, alongside Electronics, Engineering and Chemicals. The key agencies involved in the implementation are: the Biomedical Research Council (BMRC) of A*STAR, which funds and supports public research initiatives, and the Biomedical Sciences Group (BMSG) of the Economic Development Board (EDB), which focuses on industry development. In addition, Bio*One, a subsidiary of EDB's investment arm, manages four dedicated biomedical sciences funds totaling over US$ 700 m for strategic investments that have key scientific and economic contributions to Singapore's Biomedical Sciences industry.

The BMS industry cluster in Singapore comprises four key sectors: pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical technology and healthcare services, supported by the core capabilities developed at BMRC's five research institutes.
