The Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC) promotes public sector research and development in the physical sciences and engineering. It aims to build a conducive environment for research by investing in R&D capabilities and human capital through the research institutes, as well as research programmes in the universities.
The Council seeks to develop a foundation of high quality research in the following key disciplines : Microelectronics, High Performance Computing, Material Science & Engineering, Infocomm Research, Manufacturing Technology, Data Storage and Chemical Sciences.
There are currently three modes of funding support for research proposals at SERC.
They are :
- Public Sector R&D Projects Funding
This is investigator-led research where proposals are invited once a year in January and undergo a competitive merit review process for awards.
The criteria for award include scientific merit, innovative ideas, potential economic significance of the research outcomes, and the track record of the researchers.
All applications should be made through the Science and Engineering Research Council's Project Administration, Management & Submission (PAMS) System. To access PAMS, please login at http://pams.a-star.edu.sg. For new users, registration will be required. All proposals must be submitted through their respective Office of Research/Principal's or Director's Office/Agency Headquarters or equivalent.

SERC-NSF - Materials World Network
The Science & Engineering Research Council (SERC) is pleased to announce a call for research proposals in a materials research programme called Materials World Network (MWN) in conjunction with the US National Science Foundation (NSF).
All Singapore researchers submitting proposals are to do it via our Proposal Administration, Management and Submission (PAMS) system while their US counterparts are to submit theirs accordingly to the NSF. To access PAMS, please login at http://pams.a-star.edu.sg. For new users, registration will be required. All proposals must be submitted through their respective Office of Research / RI ED's Office / Equivalent.

- TSRP - Call for Proposals under the theme of "Bioenergy"
The Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC) announces a call for research proposals under the theme of 'Bioenergy'.
Biomass used for energy, or bioenergy, is a versatile material source that can be used for industry, power generation and transportation fuels. Biomass-driven combustion plants, biofuels and biogas already provide reliable, efficient and clean power and heat in many countries around the world.
Global annual fossil energy demand totals approximately 388 exajoules (EJ), with more than 80% of this demand derived from fossil fuels. Bioenergy currently accounts for over 10% of the world's energy supply and is the largest contributor of all the renewable energy sources. The International Energy Agency (IEA) Bioenergy Executive Committee has predicted the potential for biomass derived bioenergy production at 200-400 Exajoules (EJ) per annum by 2050 i.e. as high as 20-50% of predicted worldwide energy demand.
The Bioenergy TSRP is launched with the aim of focusing the R&D efforts in the following three priority thrusts :
i. Enhanced and /or novel biomass feedstocks;
ii. Improved conversion and processes for biomass to bioenergy; and
iii. Maximization of biomass resource value e.g. speciality chemicals and nutraceuticals.
All applications should be made through the Science and Engineering Research Council's Project Administration, Management & Submission (PAMS) System.
